Namakkal Fort

OVERVIEW

Breathing New Life Into Namakkal Fort With Drones

Preserving history is no easy feat — especially when it’s carved into a 200-foot-tall rock formation like the Namakkal Fort. When the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) wanted to document this iconic site, they faced a daunting challenge — a process that would typically demand 14-18 personnel working for an exhausting 30 days.

But at SKYX Aerospace, we believe in smarter solutions. We set out to prove that with drone technology, this seemingly impossible task could be done faster, better, and with incredible precision.

The SKYX Mission

Precision Meets Efficiency

  • On a crisp morning at 5:00 AM, our 2-person team set off from Coimbatore with just one drone and a few DGPS instruments.
  • By 8:30 AM, we were standing at the base of Namakkal Fort — coffee still warm in hand — preparing to rewrite how heritage documentation is done.
  • We carefully placed Ground Control Points across strategic locations to ensure precision down to the centimeter. Once the setup was complete, it was time for the magic to begin.
The Drone Takes Flight

With every parameter dialed in and pre-flight checks passed, our drone soared into the sky, following an autonomous flight path designed to capture the fort in stunning detail.

It didn’t just hover and snap pictures — it executed complex flight patterns for maximum coverage:

  • Grid Flights for high-resolution mapping.
  • Orbit and Spiral Patterns to capture the intricate rock formations from every possible angle.
  • Multi-Angle Photography to ensure depth, texture, and structure were documented with incredible clarity.

In less than half a day, the drone had gathered every detail that would’ve otherwise taken a manual team 30 long days.

Data Transformation

From Field to Data Lab - Fast Forward to Results

With data securely copied from the drone’s SD card, our field team relayed the files back to our Data Processing Team in Coimbatore. While our data experts took over, the field team moved to their next mission — knocking out three sites in just one day.

Meanwhile, our GIS analysts began stitching the captured data into a highly accurate Digital Twin of the fort.

They meticulously processed:

  • Noise Reduction – Eliminating unwanted data for pristine clarity.
  • QA/QC Inspections – Ensuring every pixel matched reality.
  • Precision Mapping – Creating outputs accurate enough to measure down to centimeters.

By the end of Day 2, ASI had everything they needed – clear, precise, and powerful documentation – in their hands.

Deliverables That Redefined Documentation

Our solution included a range of comprehensive outputs for ASI’s long-term use:

  • 3D Model — Offering a detailed, interactive replica of Namakkal Fort.
  • 3D Animation — Creating a cinematic walkthrough experience for both visitors and historians.
  • VR-Ready Virtual Tours — Enabling immersive exploration of the site from anywhere.
  • Accurate Measurement Data — Allowing ASI to inspect dimensions and features without revisiting the site.
  • Sectional Drawings — Empowering restoration teams to analyze the monument’s structure with ease.
  • Vandalism & Damage Detection — Providing early insights for faster repairs.
The Results: A New Standard for Heritage Preservation

What once took 30 days was now achieved in just 2 days.

A team of 2 people replaced the need for 18 manual surveyors.

ASI gained faster approvals, reduced errors, and significant cost savings.

The results weren’t just faster — they were better, sharper, and more insightful than ever before. The ASI team now had powerful tools that helped them inspect, analyze, and plan with ease — transforming how heritage preservation is done.

Heritage Preservation, Redefined

At SKYX Aerospace, we don’t just fly drones — we deliver solutions that break barriers. Our Namakkal Fort project didn’t just save time — it gave ASI a new vision of what’s possible with technology.

History deserves precision. Innovation makes it possible.
